Blood tests to ask your doctor for

Ever been to your doctor and asked them to test everything, to only walk away with your red and white cells, liver and kidney function test, and maybe an iron study?

Here is your guide to knowing what to ask your doctor for at your annual blood check-up:

  • FBE

  • Iron studies (iron, transferrin, ferritin, transferrin saturation

  • Thyroid panel (TSH, T3, T4, rT3, TPOAb, TGAb, TRAb TSI)

  • DHEAs, cortisol

  • Fasting glucose

  • Insulin

  • HbA1c

  • Total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides, non-HDL cholesterol

  • Active B12

  • Folate

  • Vitamin D

  • CRP, ESR, homocysteine

  • Liver function test

  • Kidney function

    Hormone panel:

  • Day 2-3 of full bleed: Oestrogen, prolactin, LH, FSH

  • 1-week post ovulation/1 week pre-period: oestrogen, progesterone, testosterone, free testosterone, SHBG, androstenedione

Please remember that GPs and other Western medicine doctors have completely different reference ranges to Naturopaths. I always recommend seeing a Naturopath to interpret your bloods properly and to actually uncover if you have an underlying imbalance. You can book in for a full consultation to do this, otherwise I also offer a stand-alone Naturopathic Pathology Interpretation where we can go over the ins and outs of your blood test and reveal what is going on within your body. I’ll also help to educate you around where your different pathology levels should be sitting!
