Tips for balancing your hormones

Follow these tips below to help balance your hormones.

  • Do not skip breakfast, try to eat 30g of protein with your breakfast (and every other meal), especially before drinking coffee. This will help to keep your blood sugar and cortisol regulated which will help your hormones stay balanced.

  • Manage your stress (easier said than done). Simple ways to manage your stress hormone cortisol is by ensuring you get morning sun, practising breath work or yoga, journaling, going for a nature walk, baking… whatever feels good for you! Cortisol imbalances can disrupt other sex and pituitary hormones hugely!

  • Ditch plastic! This includes plastic bottles, containers, chopping boards etc. These contain EDCs (endocrine-disrupting chemicals) which means they disrupt your hormones! Swap these items for glass bottles, stainless steel containers and wooden chopping boards.

  • Exercise with your cycle. Slow down around your menstrual cycle (think yoga, walks, stretching) and workout harder around ovulation (weight lifting, running, pilates).

  • Include healthy fats in your diet! Women need fats to have healthy hormones!

  • Make sure your bowels are moving effectively each and every day to help your body remove excess hormones. We want you to be having 1-2 sausage type bowel motions that sink to the bottom of the toilet, look milk brown and don’t contain any undigested food, mucus or blood (new post coming on how to help keep your bowels regular)!

There are lots of different types of hormonal imbalances that you can experience, these tips can be followed for any hormonal imbalance. For more specific imbalances (eg. Oestrogen dominance) there are lots of herbs, nutrients and diet modifications that we use in clinical practice.
